Transformational tales about animal individuals and the people changed by them, are shared in ANIMAL STORY, a partnered program in the storytelling arts.

Two stories – one fictional, one true - of animal individuals on unlikely journeys to freedom (as told thru the medium of film), are highlighted in this first program of Compassion Arts’ ANIMAL STORY series.

From Victoria Moran and William Melton, the story of “Miss Liberty” is shared in this screenplay about the fictional journey of Miss Liberty, a dairy cow who escapes from a slaughterhouse, and the impact of her life on the people deciding her fate. A presentation about the film and its story, as well as stories of other animal individuals like Miss Liberty, is shared by the film’s co-writer/co-producer Victoria Moran.

From Jusep Moreno, the true story of Matilda is offered in “When Pigs Escape”, a 2022 independent documentary about the real-life journey of a pig who escaped from a farm to give birth to her piglets in a nearby woodland. Jusep Moreno shares in film excerpts and discussion, the story of Matilda’s escape and her journey, the efforts of people working to save the pig family, and the new life of Matilda now.

The program ends with a look at some of the facts and information around the story topic of animals escaping to freedom, and ANIMAL STORY’s mission to explore the storytelling arts in animal advocacy.

Presented by ANIMAL STORY co-partners: program host Lisa Levinson ( In Defense of Animals), program co-director Zipora Schultz (Public Eye: Artists for Animals), and project creator Ellie Sarty (Compassion Arts).
